Your local resource for pollinator-centric gardening

We believe in the good that getting native plants in the ground can do

Welcome! Painted Lady Greenhouse is a nursery based in Portage, Michigan, specializing in plants native to the southwest corner of our state.

Why Painted Lady? Our namesake derives from the painted lady butterfly, Vanessa cardui. It’s the same beauty that graces our logo.

Simply put, we are passionate about pollinators! (We say passionate; others might say obsessive. One of our founders has moth and butterfly tattoos running up and down her arms.)

At our core, we are all about pollinator-centric gardening. What that means in practice is that we pay at least as much attention to function as we do to form when selecting which species to put in our gardens.

More than just a pretty face

Many native plants serve as host plants, meaning they support the lifecycle of one or more insect species.

Caterpillars can be picky

They won’t eat just any old leaf. Each species is looking for one or more specific plants—its host plants!

Getting to know native plants

What are we growing?

In addition to plant species native to Southwest Michigan, we also offer plants native to our broader ecoregion, alongside a selection of annuals which help support pollinators.
